Brialla is the widow of Xarax, the Vincaran commander who fell at Miantar, the climactic battle of the Great Civil War.  She has worn the Vincaran mourning color, brown, ever since.  She still feels spiritually connected to her late husband and even talks to him sometimes.  Both of her sons are also deceased.

Although she is physically frail, Brialla's mind is still formidable.  For the last ten years she has been raising her grandchildren, Xorax and Zola, and molding them to continue her mysterious and sinister mission...
