Vincarans

Vincarans originated in the eastern jungles of the southern continent on Kavrillia.  Although zoologically speaking they are the same species as Lanarians, they are characterized by black hair and larger, darker eyes than the Lanarians.  They also tend to have a somewhat more slender build than their northern cousins.

When the first Lanarian explorers landed on the coast of Vincaria near the city of Ozazo the Vincarans had a complex culture.  They were headed by a patriarch known simply as "The Leader," with a theocracy supporting the throne.  Elaborate temples built to honor the Vincaran gods still stand today.   Vincaran scholars made great advances in mathematics and astronomy, as much of their religion was connected with the movement of the stars.  Their greatest holiday, Troh Mar an Zhat, coincides with the springtime appearance of a particular star on the horizon.

Unfortunately, the Lanarians' technology was more advanced, and the promise of the Vincaran culture was quickly extinguished.  Within a single generation, the Vincaran population had been decimated by Lanarian disease, and many were pressed into slavery.  Their once-grand cities lay abandoned, their sacred tombs were ransacked by treasure hunters, practice of their polytheistic religion was strongly discouraged, and, in short, their entire culture was disassembled by the Lanarian invaders.  It was a dark period in the history of Kavrillia.  The Lanarian Emperor eventually decreed reforms that ended slavery and allowed the Vincarans to follow their own culture, but they have remained second-class citizens in practice if not in law ever since.

Stereotypically, Vincarans are known for stubborness and holding grudges.  Like all sterotypes, of course, this fails to adequately summarize all Vincarans.

In response to racial discrimination, in 4201 the Vincarans claimed their own nation, encompassing the southern third of the Lanarian Empire.  Those star systems, including Betegaria and Bexalit, were already predominantly Vincaran.  Their secession sparked the Great Civil War.  After two years of heavy fighting they were granted independence, and the Vincaran Federation was officially created.  Political relations between the two interstellar nations have been strained at best and at times openly hostile.  Noteable outbreaks of violence include the Wasat Crisis and the Azha Campaign.
