Brian Jacques has never nailed this down exactly. He says they are, "as big or as small as your imagination wants them."
Do the animals walk on all fours, or on their hind legs?
This varies, and, like the previous question, Jacques is reluctant to say one way or another. It seems most of the time they walk on their hind legs, but there are exceptions. Again, whatever your imagination likes best!
Why are some animals only mentioned in the first book, Redwall?
There are several animals (horses, cattle, dogs, and the
solitary beaver) that are only mentioned in the first book, Redwall. This is simply
because Brian Jacques hadn't planned on writing a whole series. He hadn't quite figured
out how he wanted the Mossflower world to work yet, and so there are a few anomalies that
pop up from time to time. Snowfur's advice: don't pay too much attention to it. ;-)
Why aren't there any raccoons,
chipmunks, meerkats, lemurs, monkeys, llamas, coyotes, emus, monkeys or
prairie dogs in Redwall? ;-)
With a few rare exceptions (namely, the Monitor Lizards) the animals
in the Redwall books are native to Brian Jacques' home nation of Great Britain.
Animals are more fun! And Jacques says that animals are like
children...they're little, but that doesn't mean they can't accomplish great things and be
very brave!
What's a stoat? What's a pine marten?
Stoats are very similar to weasels, but have darker fur. Pine martens look a bit like foxes but are more closely related to otters.
